About us

Department of Microbiology, one of the most prominent departments of the University of Chittagong under the Faculty of Biological Sciences, set out its journey in the year of 1996, with the mission to empower dedicated research and provide superior education to develop top scientists, researchers and experts in the field of Microbiology. Professor Dr. Md.  Nural Anwar, a renowned Microbiologist of the country, had served as the founding chairman of the department. The department is committed to generating, disseminating, and preserving knowledge and is dedicated to provide students an education that combines rigorous academic study along with the excitement of discovery. Now, it has become one of the few departments of the country which follows the academic calendar accurately and has a plan to use its intellectual resources and innovative ideas to meet the educational and research challenges of the 21st century.
We provide graduate (BSc), post graduate (MS), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Microbiology. Students who are placed in the forefront of the admission test results for the Faculty of Biological Sciences usually choose Microbiology as their first option of interest to get enrolled into. We have a rich seminar library containing most of the important books, journals, research papers and articles related to our subject. We are proud of our students for their contribution in the advancement of Microbiology throughout the country as well as abroad. Our students are involved in a wide range of research activities in many universities and research centers of America, England, Australia, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Norway and more and are successfully contributing to the development of modern thoughts and innovations in the field of Biological Sciences.
Faculties and researchers from the Department of Microbiology, CU, have been conducting researches on diverse areas including Medical Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Microbiology, Enzyme Biotechnology and Food Microbiology. We have collaboration with many other labs and research institutions, e.g. Bangladesh Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research (Icddr,b), Child Health Research Foundation (CHRF), on a wide array of scientific research projects.
